Global agriculture from an Indian perspective
Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management organised the Honorary guest lecture series of Ashish Wele. It was organised in November 2018 and April 2019 with four lectures during each section. The lecture series was focused on “global agriculture perspective & sustainable development”. Lecture series was open for students and faculty to attend.
Ashish Wele is currently an Independent Consultant to few Indian corporate companies and International agencies. He is responsible for successfully biofortifying pearl millet with iron, as private sector partner of a HarvestPlus (CGIAR) program. Until November 2015 as President (Business Head) of Nirmal Seeds in India, Ashish was responsible for leading a team of professionals with a special focus on developing the company in the global market with a thrust on East Africa. Ashish has expertise in designing procedures and policies for newly developing business ventures in the Agriculture sector pertaining to corporate and cooperative farming, high-tech projects of mushroom cultivation, micro-irrigation projects, sugarcane-based farming systems, and the development of sustainable seeds production models. His work in Biofortification as private sector partner is well recognised internationally and especially acclaimed by father of Indian green revolution Prof M S Swaminathan. Presently he is based in Debrecen- Hungary and shuttles between Africa and India for various assignments.
The lecture series was attended by students from various countries such as Hungary, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Columbia, China, Kenya, Nigeria, Turkey, Emirates and Mongolia as well. Active participation of few faculty members was very encouraging. The 1st part of lecture series in November 2018 was given thrust on Asean and African agriculture models along with effects of westernization & commercialization in agriculture. Students from Africa were very actively engaged in discussions after the lectures. The 2nd part of lecture series in April 2019 was more focused on Nutrion sensitive and organic agriculture along with potential of Indo Hungarian agriculture linkages. A few Hungarian students were very keen on various aspects of organic agriculture and especially interested to participate in Nutrion sensitive agriculture project through millet-based cultivation and product developments in Hungary.
