SMARTER develops and introduces innovative strategies in order to improve certain traits of sheep and goats. It studies, with the help of genetic selection, the possibilities of increasing the hardiness and efficiency of small ruminants, taking into account various environmental conditions. SMARTER, with the help of the interested parties, chose a number of essential traits including feed efficiency, health (disease resistance, survival) and animal welfare. They use experimental populations for assessing genetic and genomic variability regulating these traits, paying careful attention to genotype- environment interaction.
Staff of the Laboratory of Animal Genomics is member of the project.
