Raluca Popa’s Visit to Our Community Garden

Raluca Popa, a Romanian artist living and working in Berlin and Bucharest, is a guest artist at the MODEM Centre for Modern and Contemporary Arts in Debrecen.

Actively collaborates with ro.tranzit.org/en/project/bucuresti and The Experimental Station for Research on Art and Life in Siliștea Snagovului.Central motifs in Popa’s art are learning, the dissemination of knowledge, as well as the processes of remembering and forgetting, which she explores through various media such as animation, drawing, video, and installation. Next year, MODEM will realize the project titled Cultivators of Life together with ro.tranzit.org/en/project/bucuresti which examines the issues of gardens, sustainability, and community collaborations.

For the purpose of gaining experience, the artist visited the community garden established in 2015 on the Böszörményi Street Campus of the University of Debrecen. The garden was established with the support of the Faculty of Agricultural, and Food Sciences and Environmental Management of the University of Debrecen (UD-FAFSEM) and the Institutes for Agricultural Research and Educational Farm (UD-IAREF) and managed by the Environmental Protection Committee of UD. During the visit, student of UD-FAFSEM Veronika Szentpéteri-Nagy, representative of the Environmental Committee, informed the artist about the operation of the garden. In the garden, covering 1,000 square meters and managed with ecological considerations, university students and staff cultivate various plant species in plots ranging between 15 and 30 square meters. The garden won the Ozone Green Award in 2018 and served as a model for the creation of several other community gardens in Debrecen. The artist will inviting Veronika Szentpéteri-Nagy to visit.
