The garden of Gaia lecture series

A summary of the series of permaculture lectures entitled the GARDEN OF GAIA

MÉK has successfully completed a series of lectures, attracting university students, retired garden-friends.

From 20 February 2019 to 4 April 2019, a series of lectures on permaculture called the GARDEN OF GAIA was organized by DE-MÉK and the HÖK Environmental Protection Committee, which was held four times every second week, each time with two lectures.

When selecting the speakers and the themes, the point was to choose topics that anyone with a suburban average size garden who is able to identify with the principles of permaculture can benefit from this already in this season.

Many people were curious about the performances, so we kept them in the big lecture hall. Among the audience, we could meet our current and former students, colleagues, garden friends, organic farmers, active members of the community garden.

In connection with this topic, radio broadcasts were made with Dr. Lajos Kozák and Anikó Zsiláné André.

On the last lecture the audience thanked for the opportunity. They took a lot of notes, they said they gained a lot of valuable information and knowledge. They expressed their disappointment that there would be no more performances. In addition, they made suggestions to continue the lecture series, which would involve the invitation of several organic farmers, discussion debates, soil-, plant physiology, plant protection and architecture topics.

The series was introduced with the following:

The term "permaculture" is a combination of "permanent" or "agriculture". In the 1970s, the Australian Bill Mollison and his colleagues formulated the idea of developing a human environment and agricultural systems in a way that virtually replicates sustainable, self-sustaining systems found in nature. Animals, plants, and microorganisms also form a community in nature. As a question, is it possible to create and maintain this in the gardens? The principle and practice based on the principle conquered the whole world, but to this day, it is the most widespread in Australia, not by accident. It is an interesting question to look at why more and more people are interested in self-sustaining methods, alternative cultivation solutions. We have to see that permaculture is not just a "simple" mode of cultivation, it also carries philosophical thoughts. Over-consumption, the non-ethical distribution of the goods produced in itself is a problem, and tens of thousands of people and families have to cope with the consequences of behavioral patterns in consumer society. The technique is changing so quickly that we are unable to be up-to-date on their use. Our objects become out-of-date in a short time and they ruin. There has never been such a gap between generations. As many times in history, there are those who want to quit or at least rest from the mundane everyday life, refusing to live in the treadmill. Instead of the metropolitan form of life, they take on the "uncomfortable" but natural life. Their meals are made with their own food, and instead of a gym, they get the proper physical condition by working around their plants and animals in the open air. It is aimed at avoiding exploiting the natural resources of their children, grandchildren, and they will do their best to take care of them.

We hope that our presentations will help those who have decided to follow this way of life, and will also serve as a guideline to those who are still considering using their lands in this way.

For the first time, the lecture hall was almost full.

The last time there weren’t much fewer people either.
