Agricultural researcher in Antarctica again!

A participant in the highly successful West Antarctic scientific expedition in 2020 was László Radócz, head of the MÉK department at the University of Debrecen.

Of the 14-person team of the expedition, only 4 were Europeans, including dr. Radócz is the only Hungarian participant. Its task was to survey and determine the lichen and mushroom population appearing on the archipelago of South Orkney (British jurisdiction), as well as to ensure satellite and shortwave communication (https://hirek.unideb.hu/antarktiszi-expedicion-jart-debreceni-egyetem-kutatoja).

Encouraged by the success, the team organizes a scientific expedition again (in February of 2026), this time to the island of Bouvet (Norwegian: Bouvetøya) in the Norwegian Antarctic territory. Hungarian researcher had also never visited this area before.

In the short antarctic "summer" dr. Radócz (the only Hungarian participant) will be tasked with studying the occurrence of endemic mushroom species there. and providing satellite and shortwave communication for the expedition.

The area of Bouvet Island is 58.5 km². One of the 10 most rarely visited places in the world, it is a protected marine area. Access to the island requires special official permits (Norsk Polarinstitutt) and strict rules.

The island came under the authority of Norway in 1927.

The team members will meet on January 30, 2026 in Cape Town (South Africa), which is one of the closest inhabited places.

After the planned launch on February 1, 2026, approx. A 1.5-week boat trip follows (bypassing the dangerous ocean), after which it is expected to reach the island of Bouvet. The expedition is approx. He will spend 12-14 days on the island, after which he can return to Cape Town by the beginning of March 2026.
