Thus, in order to improve the efficiency of the production of animal products it is essential to estimate genetic variance and to preserve beneficial variants; fundamental elements of this activity are characterization of the genetic diversity of species, varieties and heirloom varieties and continuous monitoring of the state of diversity. The research planned aims to assess the genetic diversity of four different animal species, the carp (Cyprinus carpio), the pigeon (Columba livia domestica), the pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) and the ostrich (Struthio camelus); of these, the staff of the Laboratory of Animal Genomics will participate in research on carp, pigeon and pheasant. The species studied within the framework of the project planned are well suited for diversification of animal product production and, thereby, for exploiting niche markets. With the support of modern scientific background and knowledge, they possess a significant potential for development and expansion, and could therefore function as a take-off point for Hungarian agriculture.
