Conference on modern farming

Producers could learn about the latest developments and techniques at the Corn and Wheat Conference at the University of Debrecen. Thursday's program aims to make production more efficient by expanding the farmers’ knowledge.

The Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Management at the University of Debrecen hosted the conference for the third time.

- The organizers and the faculty think the same way. The best practitioners were invited to attend the event, and the faculty also strives for excellence in all areas, so we have been one of the world's 200-250 agricultural training institutes for years. Practical examples are given at the conference, we also provide practice-oriented training. The organizers strive for completeness, the whole production process of corn and wheat production is covered. In education and research, the faculty also covers the entire food chain, emphasized István Komlósi, dean of the Faculty of Agricultural, Food Science and Environmental Management at the University of Debrecen, at his opening.

Timing plays a major role in the control of corn moth, one of the most important pests of corn. The development of pesticide treatment is enhanced by the development of a fragrance trap. Researchers from the Plant Protection Institute of the University of Debrecen participated in the research, and the results were reported at the conference.

- As a result of several years of experimentation, we have developed this new kind of fragrance trap that can be used to trace the swarming of corn moth reliably. This is very important in determining exactly when to protect against hatching larvae, Antal Nagy, assistant professor at the Faculty of Agricultural, Food Science and Environmental Management, explained.

The organizers of the conference believe that about 40 percent of Hungarian producers do not know the characteristics of their own arable land at all, so they, for example, spread chemical fertilizers randomly, which can result in harvesting less crop than it would be the available.

- It is in our common interest to improve the situation. With our professional partners, we introduce the whole cycle of maize and wheat production, the latest developments and technologies in terms of nutrient supply and variety selection, as well as crop protection and precision solutions. The goal is to increase the level of knowledge and practice to approach the optimum - said István Németh, the organizer of the event and the managing director of the agricultural marketplace Magro.hu.

More than 250 farmers attended the Thursday conference, with 16 professional presentations.
